NEWS 10/14/09
***Some kind words from Dave Bazan (Pedro the Lion), who played here Sunday night:
"The Bottletree is the best club in the United States, and it’s located in Birmingham, Alabama, a somewhat unexpected place of residence for such a superb place to see music. The backstage is decorated like a combination of a junk store and my southern aunt and uncle’s house: wood paneling, old southern gospel records, pop art paintings of del monte canned fruit, plastic snowmen, and the like. The green rooms are two vintage campers equipped with a large flat-screen, an atari, a collection of about 20 books and 20 dvd’s (unique to each trailer), air conditioning, a basket of free socks for bands (!) and shag carpet pillows. The owners of this club obviously put in some time in touring bands. The room sounds great, is equipped with an actual, new, well-functioning PA, and the food is delicious (tofu peanut butter pie changed my world.)"

SIDEWALK FILMS PRESENTS:
"COOK COUNTY" - Winner of 2008 Sidewalk Film Festival
In this coming-of-age story, the absentee father (Xander Berkeley) of an alienated teenage boy (Ryan Donowho) returns home to a small town in East Texas, to discover a household of crystal meth addicts. The father, Sonny, and his teenage son, Abe, struggle to reconnect and stay clean while sharing their house with an abusive uncle (Anson Mount), who goes by the nickname "Bump". The uncle's meth-fueled rage increasingly threatens the safety of the entire family, especially the uncle's six year old daughter, Deandra. In the end, in order to save Deandra and himself from Bump's spiraling behavior, Abe is left with only one option; and Sonny, the redemptive father, must sacrifice his life to give his son the future he deserves. Come see the film that won 2008 Sidewalk Film Festival and meet the writer/director.

NEWS 7/15/09
THANK YOU to everyone who made Saturday's Rummage Sale and Silent Auction a huge success! Thanks to everyone who donated prizes, money, art, time, flesh, services - we couldn't have done it without you!
The entire day was surreal --the community of people who have rallied around us over the past several weeks has been humbling and the outpouring of support we have received has moved us all!
BottleTree is truly blessed and grateful to have so many friends and supporters!
THANK YOU EVERYONE, FOR KEEPING US STRONG AND LIGHTENING OUR SPIRITS.
We are here because of you! We are strong because of you!
SUNDAY was also an awesome day - there was a great crowd for the "Free the Midwives" Benefit with 5 great bands, and we also got to provide a catered dinner for SONIC YOUTH at Sloss Furnace -- and they loved the food! Yay!
We're proud to help promote BETA FEST 2009 - an electronic music festival at Sloss Furnace Saturday July 25 -- including Ghostland Observatory, VHS or BETA, TREASURE FINGERS, VEGA, AND MANY MANY MORE AWESOME BANDS.
NEWS 7/01/09
As many of you have heard, City Stages announced Thursday that it was going bankrupt and therefore unable to pay the remainder of what it owed to local vendors for services rendered during the festival. We are among many local businesses affected by this -- and right now, we're asking for your continued support so that we can pay our staff the thousands of dollars they are owed for the long hours they worked for City Stages (in preparation for, during, and after the festival), providing hospitality and catering for all the bands. Our staff showed up each day at 6 am, up to make coffee and set up breakfast for union and crew guys -- and stayed each night at Boutwell, sometimes not leaving until 3 am, until every band member and stage hand had showered and the premises were clear.
The death of the festival is a real loss for our city. I have very fond memories, as we all do, of seeing certain performers at City Stages that I most certainly would not have been able to see otherwise -- my favorite's include Sun Ra, Johnny Cash, and James Brown. The festival had a good, long run -- hopefully something good eventually will rise in its wake.
*The outpouring of support we received in response to this news last week from you, the community at large, and several local businesses, Rojo, Speakeasy, What's on Second? among them (THANK YOU!), has been positively humbling.
It gives me hope, not only for our community, but hope that we'll make it through this setback... we are scrappy and tough!
We're planning a benefit for July 11th -- giant rummage sale, yummy food & beer, and some bands, possibly a SUPER-GROUP of local musicians performing a medley of songs by bands that headlined City Stages....from Young Jeezy to Skynyrd!
Don't go chasing waterfalls, Mr. Roboto!
Anyhow, details will be coming soon......
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!!!!

GOOD DESIGN DOES GOOD: John Bielenberg’s Project M-ers are changing the world one simple, unexpected, well-executed idea at a time.
John Bielenberg’s creative vision has earned significant recognition throughout his 28-year graphic design career. His most profound accomplishments, however, are today taking shape as a mentor to budding designers who channel their creativity to help those most in need.
Six years ago John founded Project M (projectmlab.com), an intensive, annual summer program where young designers, writers, filmmakers, and photographers come together as strangers to take on meaty projects that affect people and communities around the world. John challenges his “mash up” of volunteers to bridge the gap between design-for-design’s-sake and its ability to change lives. “I want them to understand how smart, simple, well-executed design ideas can make a significant, positive, and sustainable impact on things they care about,” he says.
And they do. With unbridled enthusiasm and using a maverick “think wrong” approach, Project M-ers have left their marks in East Baltimore; Belfast, Maine; New Orleans; Costa Rica; and Ghana. Together they have worked to transform urban parks, preserve rainforests, promote micro-financing, and help Gulf Coast designers displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Recently, John led Project M to one of the poorest communities in America: Hale County, Alabama.
When asked, they all have the same thing to say about Project M: “absolutely, positively, life changing.”
